Gyan holds an interesting background in the Culinary Industry. Since graduating from Le Cordon Bleu New Zealand Gyan has worked in a variety of different culinary roles which include the Chef de Partie at One Fat Bird in Wellington, Sous chef at The Borough in Wellington, Creative Culinary Head at the Cooking Studio with celebrity Chef Shazia Khan, Research Culinoligist for Licious in India and Future Food Fellow for the Future Food Institute and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) collaboration.
Gyan is currently working on his business Tasty Teaching, focused on promoting mental health & well-being using food as a tool for community, empathy and resilient mindsets.
It is not taking time off but taking time within what you already do and appreciating how you can connect the ingredients with nature, bringing you closer to it while helping you relax and de-stress.
What made you choose the culinary arts?
"I was fortunate to have lived in three different countries; Oman, India and New Zealand allowing me to experience different cultures, communities, geographies and most importantly, their local food systems. Food has always been at the centre of my emotional ecosystem."
What was your favourite thing about studying at Le Cordon Bleu New Zealand?
"All the different cultures and their food systems that contributed to the learning process. The institute's passion for French cuisine and hospitality, care, eye for detail and contribution to the local community."
How do you think Le Cordon Bleu New Zealand helped you to reach your culinary goals?
"Empathy in food systems, labour and practice and community empowerment through food and wine. Resilience through constant practice."
What is your one top tip for someone coming to study in Wellington?
"Be yourself, regardless!"
What were your first impressions of Wellington as a city/region?
"Wellington has everything you need - the people, food and lifestyle is great."
Where is your favourite place to explore in Wellington?
"Wellington Botanic Gardens."
