Wine Tasting with Steve Smith MW

London

Le Cordon Bleu London were recently joined by Steve Smith MW, a leading authority in the New Zealand wine industry and joint proprietor of Smith & Sheth and Pyramid Valley, for an evening of New Zealand wines.

Steve is a graduate of Lincoln University and holds a Master of Wine from the Institute of Masters of Wine in London, being the first viticulturist in the world to hold this title. He co-founded and is Managing Director of both the Smith & Sheth Wine Company and Aotearoa New Zealand Fine Wine Estates that owns Pyramid Valley and Lowburn Ferry.

Smith & Sheth is a contemporary négociant based in Hawkes Bay who seek out exceptional parcels and vineyards, hand selecting the best grapes from each. They establish steadfast relationships with the land, growers and makers who form the DNA of their wines. The French call this terroir, but New Zealand has its own defining word - Tūrangawaewae - our place to stand in the world. This word describes the special connection of a people and the land they live, love and work in. Smith & Sheth wines reflect the magic and alchemy of this relationship and the true beauty of these places.

Pyramid Valley is a unique New Zealand wine estate with a 20-year history. Founded in 2000 in North Canterbury, the estate built up an enviable reputation for its world class, handcrafted Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines and its commitment to biodynamics and low intervention winemaking. In 2017 the property was purchased by Steve and his friend Brian Sheth who were able to realise their long-held dream of creating great wines together. In 2018 they continued the Pyramid Valley story when they purchased Manata Estate in Central Otago, a vineyard that has produced fine Pinot Noir since 2002 and is also managed following the same principals as the original North Canterbury vineyard.

During the event, guests tasted a range of wine from both Smith & Sheth and Pyramid Valley, whilst Steve talked about the fascinating history of New Zealand Wine.
